Level 3 Communications has announced plans to construct a new submarine cable connecting Colombia to its international system, Broadway World writes. The terrestrial section of the cable will be constructed in conjunction with state-backed telco Empresas Municipales de Cali (Emcali) and will use a new landing point on the Pacific coast. The cable will provide Colombia with additional connectivity, linking Cali directly to major cities such as New York and Los Angeles (US), Mexico City (Mexico), Santiago (Chile), Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Sao Paulo (Brazil) and reduces the reliance on links from the Caribbean coast. Hector Alonso, Level 3’s regional head for Latin America commented on the development: ‘Level 3 has been continually enhancing its network and services in Colombia to offer optimal solutions to our customers. This new Pacific subsea cable, in tandem with management from an experienced carrier such as Emcali, should result in meaningful benefits for the country.’ No timeframe was given for the cable’s construction and activation.
