Magyar Telekom reports slight growth in sales for Q4 2013

27 Feb 2014

Deutsche Telekom’s Hungarian subsidiary Magyar Telekom (MTel) has reported a 0.5% increase in revenues for its fourth financial quarter to 31 December 2013, to HUF165.74 billion (USD734 million). The firm said growth in mobile data revenues was offset by lower fixed and mobile voice revenues at its operations in Hungary, as well as in Macedonia, where it holds a 51% stake in Makedonski Telekom/T-Mobile Macedonia. EBITDA increased by 4.7%, from HUF37.02 billion to HUF38.75 billion, with the rise attributed to savings in operating expenses, including marketing, consultancy, rental fees, levies and redundancy payments, while net profit stood at HUF253 million, reversing a year-ago loss of HUF1.61 billion.

In operational terms, MTel’s Hungarian mobile unit saw its subscriber total rise from 4.84 million at end-2012 to 4.89 million twelve months later, with post-paid users accounting for 48.5% of the end-2013 total, up from 47.3% a year earlier. The number of mobile broadband users increased from 1.36 million to 1.71 million over the same period. The business services division T-Systems Hungary reported a further 515,701 mobile subscribers at end-2013, up 6.7% year-on-year. Although there was growth in the fixed broadband sector, with customer numbers rising 785,003 to 850,747 during 2013, the number of voice lines in service fell to 1.51 million from 1.54 million. In Macedonia, the mobile subscriber total rose 1.2% to 1.20 million, with the post-paid share remaining stable at 32.5%. The number of fixed lines in service fell by 24,708 to 266,620. In Montenegro, meanwhile, where MTel has a 76% stake in Crnogorski Telekom/T-Mobile Montenegro, the cellular subscriber total rose from 340,032 to 352,840.
