MegaFon’s 300Mbps LTE-A hailed as world’s first

26 Feb 2014

Russian cellco MegaFon has launched commercial 300Mbps LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) mobile broadband services in Moscow, which it claims to be the world’s fastest commercial LTE network. MegaFon has rolled out Category 6 (CAT 6) LTE standard technology using Huawei-supplied network infrastructure and subscriber equipment, marketed under the ‘4G+’ banner. According to a press release MegaFon has rolled out the 2600MHz band LTE-A service using a ‘unique’ combination of its own spectrum and the frequency resources of Scartel (Yota) which it previously gained access to as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). The new 300Mbps network currently has live coverage within the Sadovoye (Garden) Ring, a.k.a. ‘B’ Ring – a circular ring road avenue around central Moscow. Throughout 2014, network coverage will be expanded to encompass the entire area within the Moscow Automobile Ring Road (MKAD). In future, the company plans to expand coverage to include Russia’s largest cities. MegaFon’s LTE-A data usage is charged at the same rate as 3G and other 4G traffic.
