Regulator looks to higher authority to recover USD420m overdue BTCL fees

21 Feb 2014

State-owned fixed line incumbent Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) and its wholly owned mobile subsidiary Teletalk owe the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) approximately BDT33 billion (USD420 million) in overdue revenue sharing and spectrum fees. BTCL owes BDT17 billion in regulatory fees accumulated over five years while Teletalk is yet to hand over 3G spectrum fees of around BDT16 billion. The Daily Star reports that the BTRC has sent more than 25 letters to BTCL requesting the money, and the state audit department has advised the regulator to file a case under the Public Demands Recovery Act. The regulator has sent the recommendation to the finance and telecoms ministries for further action.
