France’s Orange Group is said to have intensified its search for acquisition targets in Spain as it looks to avoid being left out of the expected consolidation of the country’s telecommunications market. Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, claims that the French company is examining its options in discussion with investment banks, and possible targets have been named as alternative operator Jazz Telecom (Jazztel) and Xfera Moviles (Yoigo), the Spanish unit of Sweden’s TeliaSonera. A decision regarding any purchase plans is yet to be made, however, the report claims, with price expected to be a determining factor.
As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Orange Espana is the country’s second-largest cellco by customers, having overtaken rival Vodafone Spain at the end of September 2013. At that date Orange’s mobile subscriber base totalled 14.443 million, up from 13.509 million a year earlier.
