Orange Dominicana, the Dominican Republic’s second largest cellco in terms of subscribers, has launched what it claims to be the ‘first pre-paid mobile banking service’ in the country, dubbed ‘Orange m-peso’, in cooperation with Banco Popular Dominicano (BPD) and vendor GCS Systems. According to a joint press release, BPD, Orange Dominicana and GCS Systems have signed an agreement to launch the service in December 2013; under the contract, GCS Systems has designed and implemented the turnkey solution. Orange m-peso will allow mobile subscribers to combine their phone plans with virtual bank accounts, and make money transfers and deposit or withdraw money at any Orange retail unit. Further, subscribers will also be allowed to make withdrawals from the BDP’s ATM network.
