Movistar Mexico head claims Telcel is hindering number portability

5 Feb 2014

Juan Abellan, Movistar Mexico’s CEO, has accused major rival Telcel, a subsidiary of telecoms giant America Movil (AM), of blocking number portability. According to BNamericas, which cites local news source El Economista, Mr Abellan has claimed that Telcel has placed a number of obstacles in the way for customers looking to switch from it to another provider. Among the alleged tactics said to have been employed by Telcel in order to limit the number of customers porting services away from it are: the suspension of services of customer which look to leave; the refusal to provide number portability codes; and the making of calls to prospective leavers with a view to making them change their mind.
