ZOL to launch unlimited WiMAX for USD29 per month

3 Feb 2014

Zimbabwe Online (ZOL), which was acquired by Econet’s Liquid Telecom unit in 2012, is reportedly planning to launch a new mobile WiMAX service, which is currently undergoing a ‘limited public trial’. According to TechZim, ZOL’s mobile WiMAX service, which will operate using the 2.5GHz frequency band, is available via a reseller agreement with Econet. Further, ZOL is reportedly planning to charge USD29 a month for unlimited access over the network.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in January 2012 Liquid announced the acquisition of ZOL, which provides a range of dial-up, WiMAX, very small aperture terminal (VSAT) and fibre connectivity options. The company also operates more than 100 Wi-Fi hotspots ( dubbed ‘ZOLspots’) covering hotels, cafes and shopping centres.
