Japanese telecoms giant NTT DOCOMO has published its financial results for the nine months ended 31 December 2013 (9M FY2013), reporting a marginal 0.2% decrease in revenues to JPY3.364 trillion (USD32.85 billion) down from the JPY3.371 trillion reported twelve months earlier. Operating income also decreased, by JPY13.5 billion, to JPY688.7 billion year-on-year, mainly attributed to the impact of discount programmes and a decrease in mobile communications service revenues, partially compensated by an increase in equipment sales and an ‘expansion [into] new business fields’ as a result of sales promotions. The company’s net profit, however, climbed to JPY425.2 billion, a 3.8% rise from the JPY409.8 billion reported in 9M FY2012. Further, NTT DOCOMO’s EBITDA increased slightly by JPY12.0 billion to JPY1.233 trillion in the period under review. The company forecasts that its operating revenues will amount to JPY4.64 trillion by the end of FY2013 (31 March 2014), in line with its original projections, with estimated net profit of JPY510 billion forecast for the period.
In operational terms, NTT DOCOMO reported a total of 62.182 million subscribers at end-December 2013, up 2.0% year-on-year from 60.988 million in 9M FY2012. Further, the company reported that subscribers to its 3G services, marketed under the ‘FOMA’ brand, decreased by 17.5% y-o-y to 43.160 million users, while subscribers to its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) service, marketed under the brand name ‘Xi’, have increased 2.2-fold to 19.021 million compared to the 8.678 million reported twelve months previously.
