Spanish-owned telecoms company Telefonica de Argentina plans to invest around ARS1.9 billion (USD238 million) in the province of Buenos Aires this year, with a further ARS138 million earmarked for Mar del Plata. Radio Brisas reports that the investment plans were announced at a press conference by Telefonica executive Jose Luis Rodriguez Zarco, who added that in Mar del Plata the funds would be used to expand the capacity of the firm’s fixed and mobile networks, in a bid to optimise data traffic and broadband penetration. Telefonica plans to deploy a fibre-optic network to increase bandwidth in response to the surge in data traffic and rising demand for next generation services. The investment for Mar del Plata is around 97% higher than the funds spent in 2013, while capital expenditure for Buenos Aires provinces is up by roughly 73% year-on-year.
