Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has instructed all companies to vacate the 900MHz spectrum bands purchased by Viettel to avoid interference with the Vietnamese-backed cellco’s operations. All radio equipment is to cease using the band by 28 February 2014, whilst residential or industrial equipment using the spectrum must be deactivated by 29 May. MTC warned that those failing to comply with the instruction would face sanctions. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Viettel was awarded spectrum in the 899MHz-915MHz and 944MHz-960MHz ranges for Lima and Callao, with the 902MHz-915MHz and 947MHz-960MHz bands for the rest of the country in August 2012. Previously, in January 2011 it had won rights to 25MHz of 1900MHz spectrum.
