Finance Ministry approves formation of new telecoms department

13 Jan 2014

Bangladesh is proceeding with the previously announced plan to form a separate Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to operate under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MoPT), which according to officials quoted by the Financial Express, will serve to ‘eliminate confusion regarding the status of the telecommunication cadre personnel in the bureaucracy [who have been] working with Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) since [the incumbent telco’s establishment in its current form in] 2008’. The newspaper reports that the Finance Ministry has approved the creation of 255 permanent job posts at the new DoT and a total of 11,000 posts, mostly temporary, according to a MoPT official, who explained that some of the current BTCL workforce would join the DoT. The plan to launch the new department must now be approved by the Prime Minister.

As reported by CommsUpdate, in July 2013 the Bangladeshi government proposed a move to establish the DoT under the MoT – emulating the regulatory framework in India – with the aim of forming a body to develop policies and provide expert advice concerning new technologies, ideas and decisions.
