Digicel Barbados expanding high speed mobile data services

9 Jan 2014

Digicel Barbados has set a budget of BBD25 million (USD12.5 million) for ‘4G’ infrastructure rollout in full-year 2014, according to Alex Tasker, its commercial director, speaking in late-December 2013, who added that by March 2014 the cellco would double its data capacity and extend coverage ‘across Barbados’. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Digicel Barbados operates mobile WiMAX and HSPA+ mobile broadband (which it markets as ‘4G’). Tasker said that the Barbadian mobile consumer’s use of 4G data is increasing at a rapid rate and that the majority of data traffic on Digicel’s network is 4G and most handsets used are smartphones. ‘We have also been able to analyse their usage patterns as it relates to a general overview of the sites which are most visited and the apps used (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Google etc), thus helping to inform our decision to continue the expansion of our 4G capacity,’ he explained.
