Com Hem’s broadband base creeps up, triple-play users decline

29 Nov 2013

Swedish cableco Com Hem reported that its network connected (passed) 1.789 million homes at 30 September 2013 (up from 1.747 million a year earlier), while it had 829,000 unique subscribers at that date (down slightly from 831,000 at end-September 2012), of which triple-play (voice, broadband and TV) subscribers accounted for 241,000 (down from 271,000). Revenue generating units (RGUs) totalled 1.484 million at the end of Q3 2013 (down from 1.512 million twelve months previously), including 603,000 (613,000) all-digital cable TV users, 551,000 (544,000) cable broadband subscribers and 330,000 (355,000) cable IP fixed telephony customers.

Com Hem’s total revenue decreased to SEK1.104 billion (USD168 million) in the third quarter of 2013 compared to SEK1.133 billion in the corresponding quarter of 2012, as revenue from broadband services increased – due to higher volume of users plus higher ARPU due to customers upgrading to faster speeds – but TV and telephony turnover fell. Adjusted EBITDA decreased slightly to SEK571 million in July-September 2013 compared to SEK589 million a year earlier, as certain costs increased, including costs related to support agreements for the cableco’s new TiVo-based muti-screen TV platform. Operating costs decreased by SEK11 million year-on-year in 3Q13 due to lower sales costs and general expense savings, while CAPEX increased by 59.8% year-on-year from SEK167 million in 3Q12 to SEK267 million in the period under review, mainly due to spending on the TiVo-based system rollout including new set-top boxes.
