Bhutan Telecom (BT) has announced that its B-Mobile unit will launch 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in Thimpu on 24 October 2013. The network, which utilises the 1800MHz band, will offer coverage of the following locations: Norzin Lam, Chubachu, Dzong, Kawajangsa, Changangkha, the Ministers’ Enclave and Motithang High School. LTE-suitable SIM cards are priced at BTN500 (USD8.16), and include credit to the value of BTN500 which will expire within seven days of activation. BT notes that the LTE network provides downlink transmission speeds four times faster than 3G, and ten times quicker than its ADSL network.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in February 2013 BT enlisted Swedish telecoms vendor Ericsson to roll out a 4G network in Thimpu. The agreement followed Ericsson’s successful deployment of 2G and 3G networks for BT mobile subsidiary B-Mobile in 2003 and 2008 respectively.
