IMEI lost/stolen phone database goes live

1 Oct 2013

Canada’s major mobile network operators have jointly launched automatic blocking of mobile devices registered as lost and stolen using the GSM Association (GSMA) International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) database, with effect from 30 September, the deadline set by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Devices connecting to Canadian networks will be verified using their IMEI code, enabling blocking of devices reported as lost or stolen by Canadian and US carriers that participate in the GSMA IMEI database. All operator members of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) joined the launch.
