PT extends connectivity to the Savage Islands

16 Sep 2013

Portugal Telecom (PT) has introduced voice telephony to the Ilhas Selvagens (Savage Islands), a small archipelago situated in the North Atlantic, midway between Madeira and the Canary Islands. The islands have been connected via a satellite link. The development is likely to be viewed as a political move by Spain, however; Portugal places its southernmost Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) claim south of the Savage Islands, angering the Spanish authorities. The Savage Islands’ habitability determines whether they should be seen as islands or rocks, and the Spanish government continues to dispute the status of the islands. The only year-round inhabitants of the islands are said to be the wardens of Madeira’s Natural Park.
