The Czech units of Telefonica of Spain and Germany’s T-Mobile have begun talks over the sharing of 2G and 3G infrastructure in the eastern European nation. In a statement yesterday, Telefonica confirmed that the proposed consolidation of both operators’ networks would significantly extend their previous agreement in which they have already been sharing part of their 3G networks. Under the plan, Telefonica O2 CR and T-Mobile CR intend to ‘split up’ the country’s roughly 10.5 million population into two geographic areas, each to be served by one of the operators. The move is expected to result in sizeable cost savings going forward as it will involve the consolidation of thousands of base transceiver stations.
