Ukraine’s largest cellco by subscribers Kyivstar has upgraded its DWDM-based fibre-optic backbone network capacity from 10Gbps to 100Gbps on key routes linking major cities totalling around 5,500km, using Cisco equipment, it announced in a press release. Routes upgraded include: Kiev-Kharkiv, Kiev-Lviv, Kharkiv-Lviv, Kharkiv-Dnipropetrovsk, Dnipropetrovsk-Odessa, Odessa-Lviv and Kiev-Vinnytsia. Alexander Dorofiy, deputy technical director of Kyivstar, which also operates a fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) fixed broadband access network, said that the next phase of DWDM upgrades will be to move to 400Gbps, with ‘the first preparatory steps in this direction’ scheduled for next year.
