The Bangladeshi government is expected to establish a separate Department of Telecom (DoT) which would operate under the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MoPT), according to a report by the Dhaka Tribune. The proposed move, which would emulate the regulatory set-up in neighbouring India, is aimed at establishing a body to form and develop policies to assist the government with expert advice concerning new technologies, ideas and decisions, ministry sources were quoted as saying, adding that the final proposal could be placed before the cabinet for approval when it meets next week, on 5 August. The MoPT told the Tribune: ‘We are in the final stage in establishing a separate telecom department. Our work is almost complete and will soon be ready for cabinet approval. The department will be a resource based organisation that can create significant development opportunities within the sector.’
