UCC to deactivate unregistered SIMs at end-August

25 Jul 2013

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced that it will disconnect unregistered SIMs on 31 August, local news outlet New Vision reports. Executive director of the authority Godfrey Mutabazi told the parliament’s ICT committee that the UCC had been too patient, having extended the deadline several times from its original cut-off point of end-March this year: ‘We are going to run announcements in the media about this deadline so that at the end of August nobody will have an excuse [for not registering their SIM].’ Mutabazi added that approximately 90% of subscribers had registered their SIMs, a marked improvement from the roughly 70% that had completed the process at the time of initial deadline.
