Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd (BSCCL) has launched international internet gateway (IIG) services, following an inauguration by Posts and Telecommunications Minister Shahara Khatun at the company’s premises on Tuesday, the Financial Express reports. The minister expressed hope that the international bandwidth sector will become more competitive with the presence of several private and public sector IIG licensees. BSCCL operates and maintains Bangladesh’s only connection to a high speed submarine cable, the consortium SEA-ME-WE-4 system, in which it is a member. BSCCL is also a member of the SEA-ME-WE-5 consortium to roll out a new international fibre-optic route, providing more capacity and redundancy for Bangladesh; the country expects to be connected with its second undersea cable by the end of 2014.
