Intertelecom completes IP/MPLS backhaul rollout

2 Jul 2013

Ukrainian CDMA-based mobile operator Intertelecom has completed the deployment of a national Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) backhaul transmission network in partnership with French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent, in a rollout which began in 2011. The converged all-IP network helps pave the way for evolution to 4G LTE services, while increasing network capacity nationwide to support high-bandwidth advanced mobile data applications. Components deployed on the network include Alcatel-Lucent’s 7750 Service Router, 7210 Service Aggregation Switch (SAS-M) and 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM). According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Intertelecom covers all 27 Ukrainian regions with both its 3.5G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO mobile data services and 2G CDMA voice services, with EV-DO Rev A coverage of approximately 75% of national territory and faster Rev B services available in all main population centres in each region; having announced reaching one million total subscribers to its services last November, the recent acquisition of CDMA rival ITC (including Velton) boosted Intertelcom’s group total to over 1.5 million customers (including fixed and mobile users). Boris Akulov, general director of Intertelecom, said of the latest network upgrade: ‘Having modernised our transport infrastructure with the help of Alcatel-Lucent, we prepared our network for evolution to LTE, launch of next generation communication and data services to meet end-user demand.’
