Bangladesh’s government on Tuesday approved funding for a major project under which Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) will expand its high speed fibre-optic backbone network to nearly all 482 of the country’s rural upazilas (second-tier administrative sub-districts). Presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the ‘Upazila level optical fibre cable network development project’ with a budget of BDT4.99 billion (USD63.1 million), the Financial Express reported. The new project aims to cover an additional 290 upazilas with fibre infrastructure by 2015, following BTCL’s previous fibre network rollouts which have so far linked 179 upazilas.
