Free 4G access for Vodafone users until end-October

19 Jun 2013

Vodafone Greece has announced the full launch of its 4G LTE network – which has offered limited services since Q4 2012 – by offering LTE access at no additional charge to all post- and pre-paid handset, tablet and USB modem users, who can request free 4G activation on compatible devices until 31 October 2013. On 1 November 2013 Vodafone will introduce new 4G data usage plans. Vodafone Greece currently offers nine 4G smartphones, two 4G tablets and two 4G USB modems for use on its LTE network. In an update on its LTE footprint, Vodafone claims 4G network coverage of the majority of the population of Athens and Thessaloniki, and more specifically: the Municipality of Athens and in areas of the Municipalities of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Dimitrios, Aegaleo, Alimos, Maroussi, Axarnes, Glyfada, Dafni-Hymettus, Argiroupolis, Zografou, Heraklion, Kallithea Kifissia, Muscat-Taurus, Chalcedony, Nea Ionia, Nea Smyrna, Nicaea St. John Redi, Paleo Faliro, Cholargos, Pallini, Piraeus, Rafina-Pikermiou, Filotheis, Haidari, Halandriou; the Municipality of Thessaloniki and in the Municipalities of Ambelokipoi-Menemenis, Neapolis – Sykeon, Pavlos Melas; as well as areas of the cities of Patras, Tripoli, Lamia and Larissa; plus areas of the islands of Rhodes and Paros.

TeleGeography notes that in late-October 2012 Vodafone announced it was providing ‘commercial demo’ access to its 1800MHz 4G network in selected localities around Athens, initially via a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device, and promoted its first 4G-compatible USB modem in December 2012. Meanwhile, in November that year its rival Cosmote launched full commercial LTE services.
