MTN invests USD52.34m to improve network

17 Jun 2013

Ghana’s largest telco in terms of subscribers MTN Ghana is planning to invest GHS105 million (USD52.34 million) to improve the quality of its network by upgrading and replacing obsolete equipment in 2013, All Ghana News reported. MTN Ghana’s corporate service executive Cynthia Lumor said that the company had invested a total of USD1.2 billion in network infrastructure since it started operations in 2007. According to the article, the announcement comes after Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister Paul Evans Aidoo appealed to a seven-member MTN delegation to improve the company’s network services in the region earlier this month. The cellco explained that the poor service was due to power shortages and disruption in the underground fibre cable network caused by road construction companies and estate developers, with 77 reported fibre cuts in the period January – May 2013.

According to TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in May 2013 Ghana’s National Communication Authority (NCA) imposed a GHS900,000 (USD460,000) fine on five mobile network operators for providing poor network quality to their subscribers in the Northern, Volta, Ashanti, Upper West and Upper East Regions. MTN and Glo received the largest fines of GHS300,000 each, while Expresso, Airtel and Tigo got GHS100,000 penalties each.
