URCA announces NP plans

11 Jun 2013

Bahaman telecoms watchdog the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has confirmed that fixed number portability (FNP) will be available from 3 September 2103, although inter-island porting will not be available. URCA selected Porting Access BV as the service provider for number portability (NP) in December last year and the company has begun to install the NP database. Inter-operator testing of the service is set to begin next month in readiness for the September launch. At launch, the service will be available on all islands with more than one fixed line provider, namely; Abaco, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama and New Providence. NP will allow subscribers to switch service providers without changing their telephone number and the process of transferring the number should take five working days. Subscribers whose numbers have been barred for non-payment of bills will not be eligible to port their number and will still be liable to pay any outstanding balance due to their existing provider. Mobile number portability (MNP) is expected to be in place for the introduction of competition in the wireless sector.
