Sector watchdog the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has warned that cellcos waiting for a directive to disconnect unregistered SIMs may be penalised, local news portal the Daily Monitor reports. The regulator’s statement followed complaints from wireless operators that they had not yet received official instructions from the UCC to disconnect unregistered lines. Spokespeople for MTN Uganda and Airtel noted that whilst the deadline for registration had passed at the end of May, they would not take any further action until ordered to by the regulator. UCC executive director Godffrey Mutabazi responded that ‘the switch off must begin after the deadline’, and warned that telcos waiting for official instructions to that effect would be deemed as failing to comply with the UCC’s orders and would face legal or punitive action.
