Qubee pushes hard for WiMAX sign-ups

10 May 2013

WiMAX operator Auguere Wireless Broadband Bangladesh (Qubee) has responded to tough competition from mobile internet providers by introducing more generous promotional tariffs for new sign-ups. New subscribers now receive double the previously advertised monthly data volume allowance for the first four months plus a BDT1,000 (USD12.60) discount on their monthly fees for the same period. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database estimates that Qubee’s WiMAX customer base grew from 95,000 at the end of 2011 to 168,000 at end-December 2012 but growth rates have slowed in the face of cellular-based competition, chiefly from 2.5G EDGE-based mobile internet services, but also from state-backed Teletalk’s exclusive 3G W-CDMA/HSPA service, with private sector cellcos poised to introduce their own HSPA networks via an imminent 3G licence auction.
