O2 Czech expands LTE coverage to Prague; Brno to follow in October

25 Apr 2013

Telefonica O2 CR yesterday issued a press release stating that from 15 May customers in parts of Prague will be able to enjoy data transmission speeds of up to 75Mbps on its new 4G LTE network, with Brno city centre set to follow in October.

The company has rolled out a number of LTE transmitters, primarily in the territory of municipal districts Prague 1, Prague 2, Prague 4 and Prague 10, and says that other parts of the city – including Vaclav Havel International Airport – will follow in the summer. According to O2 Czech marketing director Petr Matejovsky: ‘In June 2012 we launched LTE on the Czech market in the area of Jesenice [making O2 the first domestic operator to offer 4G]. Now we will offer LTE services to all users in the wider centre of Prague. We believe that high download and upload speeds and low ping values will be appreciated primarily by demanding clients, who request top quality connection while travelling in Prague.’

Telefonica is utilising frequencies in the 1800MHz band to support its LTE launch and says that given the available bandwidth, the maximum download speed customers will receive will be 75Mbps, while peak upload speeds will reach 37Mbps. Customers can try out the LTE technology already now in the O2 Experience Centre in Prague’s Obchodní Centrum Chodov shopping mall.

Additionally, the operator confirmed its latest 3G network improvements, saying: ‘Telefonica is gradually implementing new technologies on its transmitters [as part of its 3G network upgrade]. The new version of the HSDPA standard, supporting connection speeds of up to 14.4Mbps, will be launched in Telefonica’s entire 3G network on 15 May.’ Additionally, HSPA+ is available in selected locations already, with DC-HSPA+ technology providing peak speeds of 42Mbps in some areas.
