French backers seek to open first Guinean IXP

10 Apr 2013

According to an unconfirmed report by Telecompaper, Paris-based internet exchange point (IXP) France-IX intends to support the development of exchange points in 33 African countries by providing technical expertise and technical training sessions. The first IXP is expected to go live in Guinea later this month. France-IX managing director Franck Simon was in Guinea in October 2012, and is expected to return this month to help establish a Guinean IXP.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the broadband sector in Guinea is still in its infancy, and service penetration remained below 1% at the end of 2012, with the country home to just 12,100 subscribers at that date.
