Caribbean operator Columbus International is deploying a digital IP video platform powered by Conax, supporting live TV, VOD and network PVR features, based on Adaptive Bit Rate technology, to be made available on hybrid digital STBs and multiscreen devices. The platform is based on Conax Xtend Multiscreen technology, which is comprised of Content Security/DRM from Conax, Content Management System from MPS Broadband and Middleware from Cubiware.
Columbus plans to launch the new IP digital video platform in Barbados during its mid-April event ‘Flow World’, an interactive showcase of various products and services. Deployment to surrounding islands including Grenada, Jamaica, Trinidad and Curacao is expected in the coming months.
Elsewhere this week, Columbus International has completed the previously announced acquisition of Kelcom International, which operates as Karib Cable and is the leading cable operator in St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Antigua. Karib Cable also holds a host of telecoms licences in Barbados where it is in the early stages of network deployment. Karib Cable’s HFC cable systems pass approximately 110,000 homes across the four countries and offer cable TV, high speed internet and telephony.
With the completion of the Karib Cable transaction, Columbus’s retail operations now span eight countries across the region, pass more than 750,000 households and businesses and serve in excess of 550,000 retail customers.
