Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL), the country’s incumbent fixed line operator, is working on the expansion of its WiMAX network to areas outside of the three major cities of Lilongwe, Blantyre and Zomba. MTL’s chief commercial officer Elias Imaan told Biztechafrica that the 4G service is already available in the town of Salima, with Mangochi, Nchalo, Dwangwa, Kasungu and the border town of Karonga to follow by the end of the year. MTL, which also offers internet access via CDMA and DSL technology, launched its WiMAX network for both residential and business users in May last year.
