19 Feb 2013

Cosmote Romania has revealed that it will initiate Long Term Evolution (LTE) services on a commercial basis by the end of April 2013, with coverage of several cities at launch, including Bucharest. Ziarul Financiar quotes the company’s technical director Lampros Iskos as saying: ‘By the end of April we will launch commercial 4G services in several cities in Romania, [including] Bucharest. The [maximum] data download speed will be 75Mbps, and upload speed will be 37.5Mbps’. Mr Iskos added that the network equipment had been supplied by Ericsson of Sweden and ZTE of China.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Cosmote paid EUR179.88 million (USD232.95 million) for LTE-suitable spectrum allocations in the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands in September 2012. Rivals Vodafone and Orange inaugurated commercial LTE services in November and December 2012 respectively.
