Vietnamese-backed operator Viettel Peru activated its wireless network in a number of cities on 26 January for technical trials, RCR Wireless reports. The newcomer’s mobile network was turned on in Huarochiri, Huaura, Chinca, Ica and Trujilo, though the service is not yet commercially available. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Viettel selected Chinese vendor ZTE to roll out the infrastructure, comprising more than 2,000 base stations. Viettel was awarded concessions for use of spectrum in 1900MHz and 900MHz bands in January 2011 and August 2012 respectively.
