KKTCell introduces DC-HSPA+ in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

25 Jan 2013

Kuzey Kibris Turkcell (KKTCell), a subsidiary of Turkish mobile giant Turkcell which operates in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has announced that it has become the first operator to launch Dual Carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology in the Turkish-Cypriot administered region. Marketing general manager Ilkan Bulbul commented: ‘We are proud to introduce Dual Carrier technology … bringing further convenience to our customers’.

Established in 1999, KKTCell was initially (prior to July 2007) operated under a revenue-sharing agreement with the government of the TRNC. KKTCell introduced 3G technology on 14 October 2008, and in 2010 it became the sole TRNC operator with an international gateway, other than the TRNC Telecommunication Board. Covering 100% of the TRNC population, KKTCell claims to be the market leader with around 400,000 subscribers as of 30 September 2012. In the TRNC KKTCell competes with Vodafone Turkey (formerly Telsim), via its local subsidiary KKTC Telsim.
