Digicel deploys energy saving software

24 Jan 2013

As part of an effort to cut operating expenses, Digicel Jamaica has deployed Israeli vendor eVolution Networks’ Smart Energy Solution (SES) software throughout its network, after trials of the system in 2012 achieved significant reductions in energy consumption. SES is an automated solution that deactivates base stations during periods of low traffic demand whilst maintaining quality of service. The system is expected to cut Digicel’s annual energy usage by 2.8GWh, thereby cutting related costs by USD1.4 million.

Network design manager for Digicel Group, Stephan Curran commented: ‘eVolution’s SES is the most mature and cost optimised energy saving platform on the market. It provides a valuable solution for cutting energy across our base stations and best positions us to capitalize on the shift to a fully green network.’ Curran added that Digicel Group planned to install SES on its networks in 29 other markets.
