Following the removal of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman Farooq Awan last week by the Lahore High Court, the regulator will be left without an administrative head until March. Pro Pakistani reports that the watchdog’s other managers, Member Finance and Member Technical, have been instructed not to assume any of the powers of the chairman as both are due to retire from their positions at the end of February. The pair have been warned that such action would be deemed to be a misuse of authority and would incur a legal backlash. The government has opted to leave the PTA rudderless until new members are chosen in February/March, from which a chairman will be selected. Pro Pakistani quotes unnamed sources as describing the situation at the regulator as ‘total chaos’ adding that it was ‘unclear for many on how to carry forward their functions at [the] authority.’
