The Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) will not extend the registration period for SIM cards, AllAfrica quotes UCC spokesperson Fred Otunnu as saying. The SIM registration drive, which intends to restrict the use of mobile phones in crime, is due to end on 1 March this year: unregistered SIMs after that date will be deactivated. According to Otunnu, the UCC estimates that between 60% and 70% of the nation’s SIM cards have been registered to date and is targeting a registration rate of around 95%. Rather than extend the deadline, the UCC intends to intensify the public awareness campaign in the final months.
