Chilean telco Entel is investigating the possibility of expanding its operations in Peru through the acquisition of Nextel del Peru, Chilean daily Diario Financiero writes without giving its sources. Entel executives have reportedly made a number of trips to Peru to evaluate a potential takeover of the US-backed operator. Following in the wake of a failed attempt to widen its domestic operations, Entel’s Peruvian arm is a strong contender for future expansion: operating under the Americatel brand name, the telco concentrates on the wholesale business and corporate segments in Lima but despite its narrow focus reported strong revenue and EBITDA growth in 2011. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in late 2011/early 2012 Entel’s attempted takeover of triple-play provider Grupo GTD fell through after Chile’s anti-trust regulator imposed certain conditions on the deal.
