Kazakhtelecom launches LTE in Astana, Almaty through Altel unit

2 Jan 2013

Kazakhtelecom has announced that its wholly-owned mobile subsidiary Altel has launched services based on 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in Astana and Almaty, as had previously been rumoured. The network will reportedly utilise the 1800MHz band. At the launch event, attended by President Nursultan Nazarbayev, communications minister Askar Zhumagaliyev noted that the company plans to oversee LTE rollouts in Karaganda, Aktau, Atyrau and Aktobe in the near future.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that LTE technology should be prevalent in all regional centres of Kazakhstan by 2014, with all municipalities with a population of over 50,000 earmarked for connectivity by 2015. The remainder of the country can expect to witness the introduction of LTE by 2018.
