Telenor’s Canal Digital offers 4G broadband to pay-TV customers

18 Dec 2012

Swedish direct-to-home (DTH) satellite pay-TV provider Canal Digital, a subsidiary of Telenor Sweden, has begun reselling 4G mobile broadband services over the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network of its parent. John Nordin, managing director at Canal Digital Sweden, indicated that the move was prompted by demand for web-based ‘TV everywhere’ multi-screen services, explaining that ‘Several of the services we offer require connectivity so it feels natural to be able to offer the customer a broadband solution. We have been waiting for a wireless option with a high enough capacity, now this is a serious option.’ At the same time Telenor will directly offer Canal Digital’s DTH packages, Broadband TV News reports. Jonas Lindstrom, director of mobile services at Telenor Sweden, said of the tie-up: ‘As the 4G coverage improves it is becoming a real option for many [outside direct fibre coverage] who had previously only been able to use older broadband technologies such as ADSL. By partnering with Canal Digital, we reach out to even more potential customers and can offer them a good package with TV and broadband.’

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that in December 2011 Canal Digital’s Swedish pay-TV business, already a sister operation in the Telenor group, became a 100% subsidiary of Telenor Sweden, which acquired its cable TV and IPTV customers, whilst Canal switched focus to DTH services. Telenor Sweden’s LTE mobile network, launched in November 2010, had over 60% population coverage by May 2012, a percentage which is now estimated to have risen close to 75%.
