Vodafone Romania launches commercial LTE services in ten cities

22 Nov 2012

The Romanian subsidiary of UK-based mobile giant Vodafone Group has inaugurated commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in ten cities across the country. Vodafone Romania has confirmed that its 4G network is currently operational in Arad, Bacau, Brasov, Bucharest, Cluj, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Galati and Timisoara. With the cellco confirming that it is offering mobile broadband services at speeds of up to 75Mbps in the aforementioned locations, it has also noted that outdoor coverage in all but one of the launch locations is over 90%. Bucharest is the only exception, with the mobile operator noting that it has a lower coverage level in the capital as a result of ‘current spectrum usage limitations’. Initial subscribers can take advantage of a promotion giving them three months free service on the 4G network.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, at the end of last month Vodafone Romania, the country’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, revealed it was planning to unveil its new LTE network on a ‘limited trial’ basis on 31 October, with a full commercial launch anticipated in early-2013. At the time, CEO Inaki Berroeta was cited as saying: ‘Until the commercial launch of LTE services, which will take place early next year, Vodafone customers will be able to test 4G services at speeds up to 75Mbps in several cities. From 2013, Vodafone Romania will offer 4G services with speeds of up to 100Mbps’. The network is operating using frequencies in the 1800MHz spectrum band, and has been deployed by Chinese equipment vendor Huawei Technologies.
