Bharti, Ericsson overhaul networks in 16 African countries

20 Nov 2012

Swedish vendor Ericsson has carried out a ‘network transformation programme’ across 16 of Bharti Airtel’s African operations, an overhaul that the Indian operator claims was the largest of its kind on the African continent. Ericsson upgraded and expanded network elements including switching, radio, network management, data, charging, and consumer-services platforms and systems. The programme also enhanced Airtel’s network capacity and prepared the operator’s infrastructure for next generation services. Further, the vendor upgraded the charging platforms across all operations, introducing the latest version of Ericsson’s Charging System, enabling Airtel to offer subscribers new value-added services such as ‘mobile wallets.’

Airtel Africa’s Chief Technical Officer Eben Albertyn commented on the development: ‘The implementation of this transformation programme will enable us to further enrich our customer experience across the region. It allows us to provide Airtel subscribers with the best network possible while meeting the growing usage of mobile data.’ Lars Linden, head of Ericsson Sub-Saharan Africa, added: ‘In the transition to a Networked Society in Africa, operators are facing growing challenges in meeting the rapidly evolving demands of consumers. The focus of this project was transforming Airtel Africa’s networks to meet current and future consumer demands.’
