Ministry interference leads to further blackouts

16 Nov 2012

Following the announcement that the Ministry of the Interior had ordered a ban on mobile number portability (MNP) and further restrictions on the sale of SIMs, Pro Pakistani reports that the government will enforce a suspension on cellular services in Karachi and Quetta today. The ban, as with the Ministry’s previous dabbling in the sector, was attributed to security concerns as the Interior Ministry acts on ‘credible intelligence information’ that suggested a terrorist attack on these cities was imminent. The nation’s cellcos are reportedly expecting further suspensions throughout Muharram, though the operators are yet to officially respond to the increasing levels of interference from security agencies.
