Filipino fixed and mobile operator Globe Telecom has announced the setting up of a fibre-optic link to the island of Boracay via the ‘Boracay Submarine Cable System’, a 2km optical fibre cable capable of transmitting 80 wavelengths of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, with a capacity of 40Gbps per wavelength – expandable to 100Gbps. In a press release, Globe chief technical adviser Robert Tan said the link will provide users with ‘near to limitless transmission capacity, which will result [in] crystal-clear voice call and superfast surfing’. He went on to say that the firm has ‘powered up [its] cell sites with 3G and HSPA+ connectivity’. The Boracay Submarine Cable System is part of the group’s wider network modernisation programme to deliver improved access to more remote parts of the country, which is expected to be completed by Q1 2013.
