The Financial Times reports today that Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has expressed an interest in Vivendi’s majority stake in Maroc Telecom. Qtel is said to be preparing to make a bid for the 53% stake Maroc Telecom that is currently held by the French media and telecoms company, but that it faces competition from Etisalat. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that earlier this month Vivendi asked Credit Agricole and Lazard to gauge interest in the company’s Maroc Telecom stake without giving them a formal mandate for the sale. Vivendi chairman Jean-Rene Fourtou is believed to favour a refocusing of the group around its media holdings, to the extent that it is exploring the possibility of selling off some of its telecoms assets.
