10m subscribers still to register

25 Sep 2012

Ugandan regulator the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) has found that around six million SIMs have been registered to date, leaving more than ten million subscribers to complete registration by 1 March 2013 or face being disconnected. ‘Most customers are aware of the exercise, but a significant percentage has not registered largely due to laxity’ local paper New Vision quotes UCC executive director Godfrey Mutabaazi as saying.

The SIM registration process requires customers to provide their service operators with a passport-sized photograph and valid identification document such as a voter’s card or driver’s licence. Many subscribers are reluctant to hand over personal information or are put off by the costs of the exercise. UCC manager of consumer affairs Fred Otunnu said that therie would be no extension of the March 2013 deadline, however, saying: ‘We do not see any reason why we should extend the date. Our target is to have 90% of the customers registered by the cut-off date. The deadline is generous and we should be able to wrap-up the exercise without any problems.’
