CRa hits Telefonica with USD167m lawsuit for abusing position

18 Sep 2012

Czech altnet Ceske Radiokomunikace (CRa) has launched a lawsuit against the country’s dominant carrier Telefonica O2 CR for allegedly abusing its dominant market position, Reuters reports. CRa is suing its rival for damages of CZK3.1 billion (USD167 million), according to a statement released by Telefonica’s Czech unit yesterday. ‘We cannot comment on ongoing proceedings, but anyone can file a suit and it is up to the authorities to decide if it is legitimate or not,’ said Hany Farghali, a spokesman for Telefonica O2 CR. The lawsuit follows a March 2011 petition from another Czech operator, Vony, which sought damages of CZK4 billion against the former monopoly for squeezing margins in the ADSL internet segment. These are not isolated incidents: the Czech anti-monopoly office also has a live case against Telefonica O2 CR relating to its dominant position in high speed internet connections, which dates back to 2005.
