Extra mobile broadband spectrum approved; PEOPLEnet eager to grab it

14 Sep 2012

The Ukrainian cabinet has approved amendments to the national frequency plan to allow the use of the 1900MHz-1920MHz and 1980MHz-2000MHz bands for mobile data/voice services. Comments.ua reports that Decree No.838 of 5 September 2012 was approved following lobbying from Privat Group, the parent company of mobile operator PEOPLEnet. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network operator PEOPLEnet (the trading name of Telesystems of Ukraine) has repeatedly asked the regulatory authorities to allow it access to extra mobile broadband spectrum, and has taken the issue to court, although with no direct success. Both PEOPLEnet and fellow EV-DO network operator ITC (CDMA UA) – which also has amongst its shareholders affiliates of Privat Group – are considering moves to evolve to 4G mobile broadband, and PEOPLEnet has previously tried to win the right to apply for licences in the 1900MHz-1910MHz and 1980MHz-2000MHz bands to expand its services.
